Frequently Asked Questions
Modoki is a macOS app designed to help you create, modify, and switch between different dock layouts effortlessly. It allows full customization of your Dock layout, adapting it seamlessly to your workflow through Focus Modes, keyboard shortcuts, or manual switching.
Please note: Modoki is not a replacement for the native macOS Dock. Your Dock remains Apple's original implementation; Modoki simply applies customized layouts to enhance your user experience. Due to certain limitations imposed by Apple's system, some minor issues or unexpected behaviors might occasionally occur.
In your Mac's settings, navigate to System Settings › Focus, select the desired Focus Mode, then click "Add Filter". Select Modoki from the available filters and choose the dock layout you'd like activated when this Focus Mode is turned on.
Inside Modoki, you can access a built-in guide that walks you step-by-step through setting up Focus Filters.
Modoki integrates directly with Apple's native Focus Modes functionality. When configured within your Mac's settings, activating a specific Focus Mode automatically updates your Dock layout to match your preferences. Modoki can also automatically quit applications that aren't included in the active dock layout, keeping your workspace tidy.
Once the Focus Mode is disabled (or after manually switching dock layouts), your Dock returns instantly to its previous state, and Modoki reopens any apps that were auto-quit previously. You can also quickly switch layouts using keyboard shortcuts or the menu bar.
Yes! You can manually switch between your saved dock layouts using the Modoki menu bar item, the main application window, or keyboard shortcuts. In the main window, you can easily rename, delete, create, and customize dock layouts.
You can add apps to your existing layouts in multiple ways: through the main application window by dragging and dropping apps directly in Dock section, or simply by enabling "Add app section" in Settings > General. Apps are automatically saved to your current layout.
Yes! Modoki supports keyboard shortcuts for quick layout switching. To set up shortcuts, navigate to Settings › Shortcuts and configure your preferred shortcuts for each layout.
Yes! Modoki aims to keep your desktop clean. You can easily hide either the menu bar item, the Dock icon, or even both.
Note: If you hide both icons, you can still access Modoki using any app launcher like Spotlight, Raycast, Alfred, or Launchpad.
Currently, Modoki supports applications only. Support for adding folders and files directly into your dock layouts will be added in upcoming versions. Stay tuned!
Currently, Modoki isn't available on the Mac App Store due to Apple's sandboxing restrictions. Modoki needs deeper system integration than allowed under these restrictions. However, you can safely download and install Modoki directly from this website.
Modoki requires macOS 14 Sonoma or later and is optimized for both Intel-based Macs and Apple Silicon (M-series) Macs.

No. Modoki respects your privacy. The app does not collect, store, or share personal data. All layouts remain local on your Mac.
The only time Modoki accesses the internet is for license validation through our licensing provider, Paddle. After activation, if preferred, you can block Modoki with your firewall as no further internet access is required for normal usage. However, please note that in this case automatic updates won't work.
