Frequently Asked Questions

What is Modoki?

Modoki is a macOS app designed to help you create, modify, and switch between different dock configurations effortlessly. It allows full customization of your Dock layout, adapting it seamlessly to your workflow.

Please note: Modoki is not a replacement for the native macOS Dock. Your Dock remains Apple's original implementation; Modoki simply applies customized configurations to enhance your user experience. Due to certain limitations imposed by Apple’s system, some minor issues or unexpected behaviors might occasionally occur.

How does the automatic mode work in Modoki?

Modoki integrates directly with Apple’s native Focus Modes functionality. When configured within your Mac's settings, activating a specific Focus Mode automatically updates your Dock configuration to match your preferences. Modoki can also automatically quit applications that aren't included in the active dock configuration, keeping your workspace tidy.

Once the Focus Mode is disabled (or after manually switching dock setups), your Dock returns instantly to its previous state, and Modoki reopens any apps that were auto-quit previously.

How do I set up Modoki with Focus Modes?

In your Mac's settings, navigate to System Settings › Focus, select the desired Focus Mode, then click "Add Filter". Select Modoki from the available filters and choose the dock configuration you'd like activated when this Focus Mode is turned on.

Inside Modoki, you can access a built-in guide that walks you step-by-step through setting up Focus Filters.

Can I use Modoki manually without Focus Modes?

Yes! You can manually switch between your saved dock setups using either the Modoki menu bar item or the main application window. In the main window, you can easily rename, delete, create, and customize dock configurations.

Can I hide the Modoki menu bar item or Dock icon?

Yes! Modoki aims to keep your desktop clean. You can easily hide either the Modoki menu bar item or the Dock icon via the app's internal settings. Please note that macOS requires at least one of these items to remain visible – you cannot hide both simultaneously.

Does Modoki support adding folders or files to the Dock?

Currently, Modoki supports applications only. Support for adding folders and files directly into your dock configurations will be added in upcoming versions. Stay tuned!

Is Modoki available on the App Store?

Currently, Modoki isn't available on the Mac App Store due to Apple's sandboxing restrictions. Modoki needs deeper system integration than allowed under these restrictions. However, you can safely download and install Modoki directly from our official website.

What are Modoki's system requirements?

Modoki requires macOS 14 Sonoma or later and is optimized for both Intel-based Macs and Apple Silicon (M-series) Macs.

How long is the free trial period?

You can try Modoki completely free for 7 days before deciding to purchase a license.

Can I use one Modoki license on multiple Macs?

Yes, each Modoki license will cover multiple personal Macs. Exact details will be confirmed shortly once licensing is implemented.

Does Modoki collect or share any user data?

No. Modoki respects your privacy. The app does not collect, store, or share personal data. All configurations remain local on your Mac.

The only time Modoki accesses the internet is for license validation through our licensing provider, Paddle. After activation, if preferred, you can safely block Modoki with your firewall as no further internet access is required for normal usage.

Do you offer educational discounts?

We plan to offer educational discounts. Once licensing is implemented, please reach out to us via email from your academic (.edu) account, and we'll assist you with obtaining an educational discount.

Can I backup or export my Modoki configurations?

Currently, Modoki stores all configurations locally on your machine. A feature to backup, export, and import configurations is planned and will be available in future updates.
